Captrain Italia’s operational digitalization

Captrain Italia operates 8,300 trains per year, covering 4.9 million miles of rail track. Enzo Talarico was the former Rolling Stock Director (‘Direttore Materiale Rotabile’) for Captrain Italia, and also CEO of Tiber.Co, Captrain’s company focused on the maintenance of rolling stock. He oversaw the use of SoftRail’s MainTrack module.

About Captrain Italia

Captrain Italia runs 8,300 trains per year on the Italian rail network. For years, its smaller locomotive fleet was managed with Excel files. As the fleet grew, with newer vehicles and more data to track, that stopped being enough: changes in one area did not reach the others. The team needed one source of data entry that would flow automatically to every area of operation. Which is why Captrain adopted MainTrack, the fleet maintenance module of the SoftRail suite.

Solution implemented: MainTrack

MainTrack records, plans and monitors preventive and corrective maintenance in one digital system. As the first large operator to use it, Captrain worked directly with Binary System to shape new features. These include combined scheduling of preventive and corrective interventions, forecasting of maintenance needs based on expected kilometres, a Contractual Availability report that shows whether unavailability sits with the ECM or the RU, and a driver mobile app to report locomotive issues in real time.

Results: a leaner team with more control

Maintenance data now flows to production, where shift planners see whether a locomotive can be used and under which restrictions. Alerts arrive before expiry, and expired elements automatically become unavailable. A driver’s report triggers an alert, so production knows immediately that a locomotive is out and can reorganise. The team works faster, and without MainTrack Captrain would need at least one more person.

Binary System is a supportive organisation and our collaboration has benefitted both companies. The software grows together with our needs because Binary always listens to us. I am sure we will continue to work together in a good way into the future.
